Why I Built This

In 2023, I packed eight bags, shipped 36 boxes, moved both my cats, and made the move to Spain alone to live out a dream I’d been carrying for years.

I thought I had an advantage. I was born in Nicaragua, knew people already living in Spain, spoke Spanish. It wasn’t enough. The people I knew were busy. Castilian felt like a different rhythm. I made wrong decisions about where to stay, spent more money than I needed to, and spent months confused and finding my footing in a country that felt both familiar and completely foreign.

It took a year and a half to get there. Nobody warned me how long that would take, or what it would cost me.

What got me through was finally finding one person who knew the landscape. I kept thinking: what if I’d had this before I left?

That’s why I built Her Own Compass. I’m not an attorney or an immigration expert. I’m a woman who went through it and came out the other side. The guides, the app, the vocabulary kits, all of it is what I wish I’d had. Practical, honest, written like your most informed friend telling you exactly what she knows.

You’ll still make some mistakes. You’ll make fewer of them, and from a much more solid place.

Her Own Compass started as a set of guides and grew into something bigger. The app is the free starting point, with Q&As, Spanish vocabulary, and relocation resources built specifically for American women moving to Spain. The guides go deeper on specific topics when you're ready for that level of detail. None of it is legal, tax, or financial advice. It's built from real experience, honest research, and a genuine interest in helping you get this right. I'm not an attorney, accountant, or immigration consultant. Requirements change and every situation is different. Always verify current information with a licensed professional or the Spanish consulate in your area before making any decisions.
